here Thomas Reilly, Doohallit, Shercock taught his pupils. The subjects taught were reading, writing, and arithmetic and the language spoken was English.
They did all their writing on slates with slate pencils.
The teacher went round from house to house at night and taught the children in districts where there were no hedgeschools. It is not known what payment he got for it.
A long time afterwards national schools were introduced
The first national school in this locality was Knappa N.S.
The first to teach in it was John Graham. He lived in the school at first. From this we can learn why our school has a small room and a large one. He slept and cooked his meals in the small room, and taught his pupils in the large one.
