  1. Long ago houses were hipped gable and thatched and very few were slated. Instead of gables they sloped in the wall from the side wall up and thatched them. Frank Mc Connel has a hip gable house in Drumbran yet. The walls and the floors were made of mud. All houses that were thatched in those days were thatched from reeds wheaten straw and in very rare cases flax. The reeds were got in lakes or river and when got cut they were let wither and then put on
