- The tanning of leather was carried on extensively in Ballyconnell district. It was carried on about half a mile outside the town where some sixty to a hundred men were employed.
There were large kilns made where the hides were placed. They first thing they went through was burned timber broken fine and placed over the shins. Afterwards they were pressed with weights and left there for a considerable time. Then they were placed in a liquid made of oak bark. Then they were hung up to dry and came out excellent leather.- Faisnéiseoir
