  1. Long ago in the parish of Drumgoon there lived a man and his son in a little house by the roadway. Every night the son would go away to some neighbouring house to play cards, and he would not return until very late in the night. The father would always go to bed before his return.
    One night when the father was going to bed he left on a good turf fire, While he was in bed he heard some noise in the kitchen but he gave no attention to it as he thought it was the son who was taking his supper after coming home. The still went on for a long time until the man shouted but he got no answer. He then got afraid and he began to think what was making such a noise or what would he do.
