  1. The Potatoe-Crop.
Preparations of the Soil for Potatoes
Sir Walter Raleigh first introduced potatoes into Ireland. He owned an estate in Cork near where the town of Youghal now stands. He saw the potatoes growing in the West Indian Isles. Potatoes are vegetables. They are an underground growth called tubers Potatoes are either planted in lea-grounds or in stubble ground or in the same ground twice or in flax ground.
Long ago the inhabitants of Ireland lived chiefly on potatoes and buttermilk
They used to put the potatoes in with the spades.
First they dug the field or ploughed it. (All the potatoes were put in ridges long ago)
The way they made the ridges was they put down a rope and cut a sod called a rip sod.
They then moved the rope six feet and cut and cut other sod. he continued this till they had all the ridges made. Then the dug a sod called a cope-sod and put it on the edge of the ridges
