  1. The Landlord.
    The landlord of this district was Earl Ansley. He lived at Castle Wellan in County Down. He managed the estates through an agent living at Cavan. His agent employed a number of bailiffs and game-keepers. The landlord himself was a fairly good man, but the rents were very high and were paid half-yearly. If the tenant did not pay his rent he was evicted but in most cases the tenant was allowed back to house as care taker. If the seasons were bad and prices for farm produce low the number of evictions was greater as the farmers were unable to pay the rent. The land lord got the lands by purchasing them. The tenancy was yearly. The years 1874 to 1879 were bad and growing worse each year. In 1879 things became so bad that the tenants combined and demanded a reduction of rent. After a long struggle the landlord agreed to a small reduction. Before the close of the year the Land League spread and agent and bailiffs and game-keepers sought police protection. in 1879 the potato crop was a total failure. The potatoes then used were the "White Rock" and "Skerries". The next year the landlord supplied his tenants with a new potato, the "Champion and there was a most prolific crop in [1818]. Lord Ansley would not allow the tenant to subdivide the farm among his children
