  1. Two policemen were on duty on the Dublin Rd near Tullow on a September night in the year 1921. Between 7 & 8 o'clock two shots were heard from that direction, & some people on going out, found the two policemen dead.
    On that night many of the people of Tullow expecting trouble on account of the shooting left the town & went to the neighbouring villages.
    The next day the town was taken over by the British soldiers & the "Black & Tans" who made many raids on the houses in the town, & when they found that the people were gone out of them they decided to set fire to William Murphy's house, now owned by P. J. Griffin, the Square &
