“One fine summer's day...”
(continued from previous page)but while he was pointing, another of the gamekeepers fired at Byrne and broke his thigh. Then Jim Doran fired at the gamekeeper and, and blew the top off his head. The gamekeeper and Byrne were lying on the ground very badly wounded. The rest of them kept firing at one another, but did no harm. Jim Doran and Pierce Dreelan carried Byrne down to a barn in Ballavara. The two of them to the lining out of their coats and bandaged up Byrne, to try and stop him from bleeding. Pakie Byrne died that evening, but the gamekeeper lived for a week. The gamekeeper would die at all, only for a doctor from Graiguenamanagh gave him poison, because if he lived, he would get the two men hanged over. That night Pakie Byrne was brought from Ballavara to Graiguenamanagh in a hearse, and anyone who followed the funeral had a lighting candle. It is said that from the time the candles were lit in Ballavara, until they came to Graiguenamanagh they never went out. It is strange to say, that the grass never grew where Pakie Byrne was wounded.
