“Her fathers name was Cummins and he was a District Inspector in the old Royal Irish Constabulary.”
The following items were told by Mrs John Claffey of Cloghan who died about 20 years ago at the age of 85 years, to Francis O'Connor & written by Bernard Robinson, on the 21st day of November.
Her (Mrs Claffeys) fathers name was Cummins and he was a District Inspector in the old Royal Irish Constabulary. Her mothers name was L'Estrange & she was a native of Cloghan. Her father was stationed at Calton in Galway one time and Mrs Claffey was sent to Cloghan on a visit to her mothers friends.
She remembred travelling on the Fly boat on the Grand Canal from Ballinasloe to Clononey. Clononey is midway between Belmont & Shannon Harbout & about 2 English miles to the west of Cloghan. She said she remembered one of the crew saying take that child out of that when he was coiling a a piece of rope. Women with baskets of fruit were in the habit of meeting the Fly boat at Clononey to sell fruit to the passengers.
