  1. Mr Dempsey assures me that the Flail was used round here up to late years.
    The corn used to be cut with the 'Hook', and the hay with a Scythe. He says that 60 yrs ago there were not 2 mowing machines. It was common in those days to see 16 to 20 men in a field cutting corn. This too had all to be threshed with the Flail. The "winnowing" (before winnow machines came in) was done by the women of the farm 'holding it up to the wind on a windy day and let the wind winnow it'
