- Long ago priests were not allowed to offer sacrifice in a church. If a priest was caught saying Mass he would be killed. So in order to keep the true religion alive in Ireland the priest had to say out behind a hedge on the top of a hill where there would be a good view all around the country to see if there were priest-hunter after them.
Generally the priest would get a stone-flag and place it like a bench so that he could leave the sacred vessels on. Any priest that was caught saying Mass was brought to the hills of Fore.
