  1. Many songs were composed in this district long ago. Here is one which was composed by Patrick Elliott of Tonagh, near Athlone in 1880.

    Kicking the Buckett

My wife is a hell of a spree,
The day she's not breaking she's Brewing,
Her motto is whiskey and Tea,
And the day she's not smoking she's chewing
When I asked her be pledged tother day
She shut the big fist and she shook it
Says she I'll have whiskey and tea,
The day you'll be kicking the Bucket.

    (II)
But all the good luck that I had,
In spite of my threats and my warning
One night she got sick and so bad
I thought she'd not live to see morning,
Said I by the powers above,
Tis my duty I nere will o'er look,
I'll send for a Doctor my Dove
Afrade of you kicking the Bucket.
