  1. On the shores of Lough Owel, three miles North of Mullingar stands the ruins of an ancient monastery of St Loman. It was plundered by Cromwell's soldiers and the monks driven out. The front arch of the Church remains standing to the present day.
    About four miles further North on the shores of Lough Iron are the ruins of the famous Abbey of Tristernagh. It was also plundered and the monks in their flight rushed into the lake with the Sacred vessels and
