    take gates from one house and leave them at the house of a neighbour. A very common game played long ago and yet was this:- Four plates were placed on a table, water on one, clay on another, a ring on another and a cross on the other. One of the players was then blindfolded and sent over to the table. If he put his hand on the plate containing the water it was believed he would cross the sea to a foreign country before the year was ended. If he touched the clay it was said he would die before that time twelve months. If he touched the ring he would be married soon and if he touched the Cross he would be a priest or if a girl was playing she would be a nun.
    Cutting the sweet Cake on this night was great fun as everyone was watching who would get the ring.
    They used to examine the ashes at the fireside very minutely the following morning to see if there were any tracks of human feet to be seen there and what direction they were facing. If the toe was facing the door they believed that some one would die in the house soon, but if it were facing the fire no one
