  1. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Before the mass the priest blesses ashes and with them signs the people with a cross on the forehead saying remember man that thou art dust and into dust thou shalt return. Long ago the people used to drink their tea black and their bread dry on that day doing penances for their sins.
