   To that dread torment, knowing night and day.
   The beauty and the glory of God's face
   Those souls have seen, the vision e'er remains.
   Their longing to be with Him grows apace,
   The anguish almost bursts their fiery chains.

   Then let us hearken to that sad appeal,
   By prayer and deed to hasten their release,
   And oh, what holy gratitude they'll feel
   For every little help that brought them peace.
   And when we come to die, and pass away
   Shivering and lonely, what relief untold,
   When those bright spirits meet us lovingly.
   And all our prayers return a thousand fold.
