  1. Mounds of earth encircled with ditches, bushes or trees are known as forts. In older times they were used by the Irish as safeguards against the wild beasts which prowled about. Later they were used as a fortification in time of war and when they were discarded the good people were supposed to have taken possession of them.
    The moat of Donohill is the principal fort in my district. Tradition says that there is a treasure hidden there and that about 80 years ago a man named Mr Horan tried to unearth it.
    He began to dig and a woman with long red hair appeared to him and told him to stop as he was disturbing the fairies. The man put no heed on her protests and continued. He made a large hole which can still be seen, but found nothing. After this his family were troubled with various diseases.
    On another occasion he went to plough the moat. As he was starting....
