    In this district the first Sunday of Lent is known as "Chalk Sunday and there is an old custom associated with it which is still observed her. On that Sunday, which is the first after Shrovetide, those men who were eligible for Matrimony and who did not get married, are subjected to a good deal of annoyance. A group of boys armed with pieces of chalk wait out side the Church gates and when the congregation is leaving after Mass these boys make a raid on those who did not get married and draw streaks of chalk on the backs of their coats to the general amusement of the onlookers
