- (continued from previous page)was steeped in melted tallow. These were called sluts.Wax candles:- My grand uncle John McGrath had a lot of bees and from the bees wax he made was candles. He boiled down all the honey combs in the winter, the pure wax went to the bottom the dross came to the top. He strained away all the dross and melted the wax again. This he used in the same was as the tallow.
With all these candles a snuffer had to be used.
James Fogarty Graiguefrehane had a forge in which he made hay forks spades iron gates ploughs and fire cranes. The forge is still to be seen.
There are the remains of two querns here still one at Mr. Barrys Kilnesare and one at Mr Leahys Lisheenatagart. The grain ground in them was known as grawn and was cooked on milk and eaten.
