- A mowing machine was unheard of in this parish fifty years ago. The cutting of the hay and corn was done by the scythe. Using the scythe was very hard work and great strength and endurance was required by the mower.
They used to work from dawn until dark. Milk and water was drunk frequently during the day owing to the hard work. Jimmie O'Meara was one of best mowers in this area. He used to mow an Irish acre of hay with a scythe in one day.- Collector
