  1. One mile East of Tory Hill on the Commoge is situated Manister. The ancient name was Aenagh beag to distinguish it from Aenagh or Nenagh.
Sports and fairs were held there in ancient times similar to the present day Olympic or Tailtean Games. In 1148 Turlogh O Brian founded a monastery there in honour of the B.V.M. for Cistercian monks from Mellifont in Louth. Its size covers 2 acres and by the appearance of its ruins must have been a large and substantial building. It was the parent of many monasteries throughout Munster. It is now a graveyard.
An important battle was fount at Manister on 3rd October 1,579 between the Irish under Sir John Fitzgerald and the English under Malby. The battle was witnessed by the Earl of Desmond from the summit of Tory Hill after which he returned to his stronghold at Askeaton.
