specimen of his style from the land of the stars and stripes. It reveals at once that the feir na filiocta which animated him in the the distress he suffered from the wilfulness of the grey stripper , was still palpitant when an exile in the city of gangsters and meat curers, and that his outlook on life was not marred, in its rosy spirit of good humour, by the hard materialism of the land of his adoption. I give but samples from the long poem of Mr. Marshall, written from memory by Mce. Devaney for me:
"A Comical Composition on Bill's returning home".
Come boys, I will tell you what happened of late,
In the town of Chicago in this very
    State.
'Twas sometime in April, if I don't mistake.
Poor William came over his fortune to make.
He got on the street car near Palkes St., in Clarke.
And we just got him home between day light and dark.
We had all sorts of liquor that ever was seen
And a hearty reception we gave " Mr Green ".
The following Sunday I went to Dave Burke.
To know would he put my big brother to work
"Well" says Dave "If tomorrow be any way fine.
Send him back in the morning to Paddy O'Brien".
Bill was a brother of the poet. D.O.C.)
