- Churns are not as plentiful now as in days gone by. There are several kinds of churns. There is a barrel churn and is turned by a small pony or a donkey. The barrel churn is round in shape and it is about five feet high. Before creameries were established people made the butter at home with a churn. They generally used to make it with barrel churn because it used only take about a half an hour to make butter and it would take about three times as long with any other churn.
