    With the same object but with much superior organisation and strength the Volunteer Force came into existence in 1916 and one of the first encounters with the Black and Tans occured at Ballynaught Bruree when one soldier was killed and two people of the village having no connection with the ambush were fatally shot by the soldiers. But unlike the Fenian movement the efforts of the Volunteers were not in vain as they were instrutmented in freeing the country from the yoke of British rule and hence “Éire”
