Another industry which was carried on in the town was that of nail making. There were three or four men employed at this work. They were living at the end of the town. Thin bars of rod iron were reddened in the fire, they were then hammered on an anvil, and then put into a mould and the length required was cut off.
All nails are now made by machinery.
Another trade was was carried on in the town was that of coopering which means the making of barrels, tubs, and firkins for putting butter into, as butter was made in every farm in olden times, before creameries were established. There were four coopers kept employed at this trade. This trade has been also done away with.
Candle-making too was practised in the olden times in all the country. Candles were made of tallow which was melted and poured into a mould the shape of a candle.
