  1. In former times girls of this district (Grange, Fermoy parish, Co Cork) and to make their own toys. This is the way they used to make dolls. They used fill a paper bag with hay or straw. This was the doll's body. Then a small turnip was got for the head and holes cut in it for the eyes and mouth. The nose was also shaped on it. Two small pieces of glass were put into the holes for the eyes. Then a short sharp piece of ash was stuck through the head and down into the body.
Girls used to make dolls' cots also. They used first mak a rectangular frame by tying four pieces of wood together in the required shape. Font upright sticks were attached at the corners to serve as legs. Cords or threads were then tied across and up and down the frame and on these the doll was laid.
