planting the potatoes. Sometimes help is hired. During the Summer they are scuffled and later on sprayed. When quite ready they are dug and put in a pit. It is just a long trench a couple of feet wide. The potatoes are placed in the pit, soil is spread over them, and then they are secured from frost and rats by a heavy covering of ferns or furze, or stalks. Old people can recall starch being made from the potatoes known as "Champions". This is not now done - as we purchase starch in the shops conveniently and cheaply.
The local names given to the potatoes are, Kerr's Pinks, Champions, Arran Banners. The Kerr's Pinks best in this district.
