  1. 27. Sites of Castles
    Monanimy Castle is in the townland of Monanimy & built on a rock overlooking the Blackwater. It is supposed to be a Norman Castle and is inhabited at present by Miss A. M. Berry. It is therefore in a good state of preservation. In this castle formerly, it is believed, the Monks who lived close by sought refuge in cases of attack.
    The Barry family were the first to inhabit the Castle, when they came into possession in 1818.
    Carrigacunna Castle is in the townland of Carrigacunna and is also built on a rock overlooking the Blackwater. It has been renovated by George Carleton Footte and by General William Marshall who were formerly owners of same.
