tallow which was obtained from the fat of a cow or a sheep which was generally killed for the purpose. These lights were known as "dips".

  2. They also used bogdeal splinters. This bogdeal was pine-wood which had been buried in the bog for a great many centuries.
It was dug up and split into long laths about half an inch square and when properly dried it gave quite a good light as it contained a certain amount of resin and turpentine. The oil lamp followed after this period.
