Long ago people made candles from rendered fat of all animals and sheep's wool or perhaps withered rushes with the skin taken off at one side were used as wicks.

Long ago people made candles from rendered fat of all animals and sheep's wool or perhaps withered rushes with the skin taken off at one side were used as wicks.
This is how they were made. When the fat was rendered in a pot the rush or the wool was dipped into it and the grease would cling on to it. This was done several times and when it was finished it was hung up to dry.
