“Long ago houses were made altogether different to what they are now.”
Long-ago houses were made altogether different to what they are now.
First the people gathered together a very large heap of clay. Then there were rushes mixed with it to keep it from splitting when it dried. They then threw water on it and took off their boots and danced on it to temper it. When this was mixed it was a very sticky solution.
A couple of days afterwards they would start building the house. - Seldom they made any foundation. They made the outside walls with any kind of an implement obtainable while important work around the fire-places,(continues on next page)
