    Come here a bit nearer
    I'll tell you a tale,
    How brave DeValera
    Got out of the jail.
    With high walls around
    And doors trim and tight
    His freedom he found
At the dead hour of night.
    A motor-car tooted
    The brakes were applied,
    He boarded and scooted
    When he got outside.
    When the Governor found
    That Eamonn had fled,
    He offered five pounds
    For the Irishman's head.
    O pity his chance,
    As well to have tried,
    For to stem the advance
    Of Shannon's wide tide.
