- The names of cows are very diversified. Some of the old Gaelic names are retained e.g :-
báinín, dearg, deargín, maol, leath-adharc, riabhach, maol-riabhach, cúibín, portín, clárach, red screathan.Some names are direct translations from the Irish names e.g.
White-face. The Small red. The One-Horned red.Names are given in English because of colour etc :-
Snow-legs. The Black & Tan. Spot. (name given to a white cow with spots which may be either black or red. Goose-berry to a brown coloured cow.
Strawberry. The Brindle to a greyish or roan colour. Maghie to a Black & White coloured cow.Names are given because of some quality peculiar to the cow. e.g.
Milk-maid to the best milker in the ‘bán’. The Beauty. The High-jumper. The Thief. The Deer. The Kicker. The Short-horn. The Cocked-horn. The Puck, (because of having horns like a goat.)(continues on next page)- Informant
