About four years ago, I was diggin' the land.

    I
About four years ago, I was diggin' the land
With me "brógs" on me feet and me spade in me hand
'Ses I to meself what a pity to see
Such a sportin' young blade diggin' turf in Tralee
    Chorus
Wisha' Erin go bráth, shillelagh and all
And me heart goes wid' ye, sweet Erin go bráth.
    II
So I buttered me "brógs" & shook hands to me spade
And I'm off to the fair like a sportin' young blade.
Up comes the "sargent", he "axed" me to 'list
Wisha! sargent a chroidhe put the "bob" in me fist
    Chorus.
    III
Here is a shilling, I've got no more
When you go to head quarters you'll get a half score
Wisha! "quarters" 'ses I bidding the sergeant good bye
You wouldn't like to be quartered nor "nather would I
    Chorus
    IV
The first thing they gave me it was a red coat,
And two straps of leather to tie round me throat
They gave me a "quare" thing, I "axed" what was that
They said it was a cockade for me hat.
    Chorus.
