    the hands of skilled masons, when one night a strange thing happened. For, when the labourers arrived on the following morning to continue work their were astounded to see the partly built church in ruins. The Protestants, naturally were furious, but as no clue was left by the perpetrators, the deed could be changed to no one. The work of the building was begun again, and had progressed somewhat when the outrage was repeated. This time the Protestants woke in action, and a watch was set on the graveyard every night thence.
    Three nights later a shivering watchman stood in the shadow of a gnarled elm. The stars were swallowed up in a thick blanket of darkness - no moon shone it was the dead hour of night. Suddenly a flash of blinding light, strong as the suns rays, lit up the churchyard; as the terrified watchman looked round to divine the reason, a horseman on a white steed dashed into sight. The apparition had circled the new church a few times, when from the hand of the rider, a heavy object was projected at the walls. They crumbled
