    The date, 1585, while it probably fixes the period of the ornamented windows, reed not necessarily imply that the main castle was being constructed at that time. In all probability it was built a century earlier.
    The initials represented the Irish names of the owners in 1585, Randal Hurley and his wife.
    The Hurleys are stated to have been originally from Limerick.
    They lost their castle and lands after the great rebellion of 1641, in which which the owner of Ballinacarriga Castle took a conspicuous part.
    Many families of the name still exist whose members play their part in the mercantile and farming interests throughout Cork City and County.
