  1. Many books of folklore have been written in connection with strong men. Some of the old people who live in Tonroe have told me that there were many strong men living in the village of Tonroe.
I am told that Thaddy Cregg was the strongest man in Tonroe. Now one bright May morning Thaddy got up from bed with the intention of doing a good days work cutting turf himself and his brother. He was to cut the turf and his brother had to spread it. When they reached the turf bank both took off their shoes and started working. It was five o'clock in the morning when they started. Other men never as much as thought of getting up, but when they saw Thaddy below in the bank working they could hardly believe it. Thaddy worked hard the whole day. He never lifted his head except when going to his dinner or his tea. In the evening on his return home from work he had a different story to tell because he had four spit of turf cut. Everybody thought he would be unable to work for a week afterwards.
