  1. The ruins of the ancient abbey of Aghaboe are about five miles from the little village of Ballacolla. This old place was at one time according to stories told a very large city. One of the finest buildings which is now in ruins was owned by the monks of the order of St Canice. About three or four miles further on was another large monastery in which the monks of St. Canice also lived. In those days there was no post or telephone and any messages that were sent were very often taken by men on foot
