  1. About two and a half miles from Portlaoighise and four miles from Abbeyleix is the townland of Clonad.
    In this townland there is a field known as the "Kill V. S.". This place got its name from the fact that in the sixteenth century, Essex and his army marched from Portlaoighise, out through Knockmay, and on through Clonad, until they came to a stop in this field, where they were met by the men of Laoighis, and attacked.
