- Monasterevan (Passlands).During the time of Saint Evan and for many years after his death, Monasterevan prospered. At one time it was ruled by the Geraldings. In 1649 Cromwell came to Ireland, he passed through Monasterevan on his way to attack Lea castle, situated about four miles from the town. He planted an elder tree in Monasterevan at a place now known as the Pass bridge or Cromwell's Pass and the townsland is called Passlands.This elder tree was destroyed in 1922 when the bridge was blown up by the Republican forces.Sr. M.
