  1. A half - witted man in the neighbour hood made a song on the Famine, one verse is remembered.
    "July the first in Carnowen town,
    There was a hungry battle.
    Where many a man sat on the stones
    And hammers he did rattle."
    A man was found lying dead in the hedge at Kilnamaddy during the famine period. He was opened by a Doctor and there was nothing in his stomach but a half pint of water.
