like a bird. When the challenger saw him jumping the river he gave up the fight and handed Bull a pound.
Long ago there were strong men in the gatherings at the crossroads, who could throw very heavy stones and weights. These men were often blacksmiths. They could do some jumps such as rivers, high ditches and bog-holes. There is a famous hero living yet in my district. He is John McGeogh of Annaglaive a very famous runner. He won many great marathon races and held the running championship of Scotland for a couple of years.
In olden times the people of this district would think nothing of going from here every year to the holy well outside Dundalk, on foot. Some of these old people are living yet. There was one famous mower in this district, known as Terry Conlon. He used to mow an Irish acre of corn himself in one day, at his leisure.
There is an old story told in this district about a challenge between a woman and a man connected with mythological people. The man was known as Eoiny Lennon and the woman was known among the people as Big Biddy Arty. Eoiny challenged this woman at a scutching match. As they started scutching Eoiny said "Here comes one and four of the best" and Big Biddy said "Here comes one and all the rest". The scutching did not last long until Big Biddy won the match.
