    Once upon a time there lived at Ballyseedy an old woman who had but one son.

    to the other side of the lake. Then the princess made to take hold of Jack and caught him by the shoe which slipped and remained in her hand. Jack galloped off faster than the March wind and passed out the gale which was before him, but the gale that was behind him could not over take him. When Jack drove home the cows that night there was great rejoicing at the king's palace but to find the champion who killed the monster was their only trouble. The king invited all the princes who were laying claim for the princess's hand. They all knew that the lock of hair and the piece of ear was taken from Jack's head. Now some of the champions nearly skinned the sides of their heads off while more scalped their crowns. Some cut off half one ear whilst others cut it nearly all off
