- (continued from previous page)windows were usually very small. They did not worry much about ventilation in those days. In the kitchen there was a "settle-bed" which could be closed up by day. Then a large dresser of ware adorned one side, while a wee dresser for saucepans adorned the other. A big deal table and sugan chairs were the remaining furniture. The sugan chairs were made of twisted hary. The bed rooms were simply furnished. The "comp bed" was heavily draped with curtains. People of to-day consider such beds very unhealthy. There were two doors in the kitchen, one was called "the half-door". Their lighting system was very crude. Cotton wicks and mishes dipped in melted tallow served as light. Under-neath the roof were several small crosses made of timber in honour of St. Bridget. These were firmly stuck into raftercovering. The walls were whitewashed and the floor was earthen.
