    Two girls go aside and settle between themselves which of them is to represent a watch and which a clock. They join hands and the other girls come on in a row saying
    "Dan Dan thread the needle
    Dan Dan
    Can Your mother stitch a bonnet
    No No No"
    The two with hands joined say
    "Lord Duke, Lord John
    Let you all pass by but the very last wan"
    The children pass under the raised hands of those two until the last child comes she is asked "Which do you prefer a clock or a watch." If she says "watch" she stands behind watch and if clock she stands behind clock When all have been questioned a tug of war follows.
