  1. There is an old graveyard in a field in Ballyscannell, in the parish of Ahamilish, and County of SLigo. This field belonged to the late Michael McGowan of that townland and now belongs to his nephew a man named Duggan There is very little trace of this graveyard now but many hundred years ago it was in use. There is a priest named Father Mac Mara, or MacNaMara and a man named O'Hara buried there. There are also two brothers named Scanlon buried in this graceyard. A big flat stone in the field bears the inscription "Scanlons buried here R.I.P." It is from these two brothers that the townland of Ballyscannel got its name.
