    hole in the wall for a window. The hole used be closed with a shutter and sometimes with a bay of hay.
    The floors were made of clay and some houses had a fire flag.
    Very seldom houses have half doors now but nearly every house had one long ago to keep out the hens or the pig. Turf was always burned with dry branches and some bog deal.
    Light was got very long ago from bog-deal splinters and rush lights. Rush lights were made by peeling rushes and dipping the inside in fat. No one ever heard of candles being made in this district.
