    the farmer ties a red string or ribbon on her tail so that no harm may befall the cow or calf. The old people apparently thought the fairies had some special power over their animals and milk on May Eve; therefore, they took all these precautions, and some people practise these customs in this area yet. They also look forward to the cuckoo's singing on this evening, especially if they have plenty of silver coins in their pockets. They think this is a sign that they will have plenty of money for the remainder of the year.
    May Day.
    There is a great look out for the first visitor to the house on May morning. All like to see a dark haired young man as the first stranger to the house. If the man is red haired and of poor circumstances
