    it is narrow and four if it is
    wide and a split is dropped into
    each hole. Some people wear a
    "prasein" if they have no guggerer.
    They keep the splits in this bag.
    The holes are then closed to prevent
    wild birds from injuring them.
    The centre of the ridges are
    filled in with clay taken from
    the furrows. When the stalks make
    their appearance they are covered
    with mould. The object of moulding
    is to encourage the growth of
    the plants. It is usual to mould
    the crop twice during the early
    stages of growth.
    Another hard operation for
    the farmers is spraying the potatoe
    crops. When the farmers see any
    danger of the "blight" they spray
    the stalks with a mixture of
    blue-stone and soda. They do this
    to prevent the "blight" from
    destroying the crop.
