  1. There was once a boy and he joined himself with a band of thieves. One night the thieves got a rope and put it around him and let him down a chimney and told him to steal all the money he could get so when he had the money got and handed up to them they opened the rope and let him fall down the chimney again and would not pull him up, but he found a goat skin in the house and put it on him and banged the door until the man of the house got up and opened it for him thinking he was the devil. The fellow with the goat skin went to the house where the thieves were and started scratching at the window. The thieves were counting their money and they ran out and left all the money on the table. Then the fellow with the goat skin went in and took it. When he went home he told his father all he had done so his father gave him three trials to prove was he a good thief. First he was to take horses from under a plough and a man ploughing. He got a few rabbits and let them out in the field so the man who was ploughing ran after the rabbits and the other fellow took the horses from under the plough. That was his first task done. His second task was to take horses out of a barn and a man standing in the door with a whip. The boy got a bottle of whisky and started staggering into the shore. The other fellow with the whip ran over and took the bottle of whiskey out of his pocket and drank it and got drunk, so the boy took the horses
